Providing a Living Wage
Lidl UK was incredibly proud to be the first British supermarket to implement the recommendations of the Living Wage from October 2015.
Since then, our employees have received a minimum of £8.25 per hours nationally across England, Scotland and Wales and £9.40 per hour in London – a figure well above the National Living Wage and minimum wage – making a genuine difference to over 50% of our 19,000 employees and representing an average annual wage increase of £1,200.
Every single Lidl employee is playing a crucial role in our success, and introducing the Living Wage was an important way for us to acknowledge this, underlining how much we truly value their contribution and commitment to helping us deliver the ‘best quality for the best price’ to our customers.

Employee opinion is of particular importance to us. It is our goal to maintain long-term employee performance and motivation. In 2009, we commissioned the prestigious Institute for Economic and Organisational Psychology of the University of Mannheim to carry out an anonymous employee survey. A follow-up survey was also carried out in 2010.
The employee survey was well received and, significantly, the analysis of the results demonstrated that employees strongly related to their job role and to Lidl as their employer.
